Alexander: American Families Deserve More Choices of the Best Possible Schools for Their Children

Celebrates National School Choice Week 2019

WASHINGTON, January 22, 2019 — Senate education committee Chairman Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) today released the following statement commemorating National School Choice Week of 2019:

“Low-income families should have more of the same choices of schools that wealthier families already have for their children. When President Trump signed the tax bill, he opened the door for families to use the tax code to exercise school choice through 529 savings accounts — which was previously only available to help pay for college — to help pay for tuition at an accredited religious or private school. I am going to continue to work to give more American families broader choices of the best possible schools for their children.”

Alexander is a cosponsor of a resolution offered by Senator Tim Scott (R-S.C.) designating the week of Jan. 20 through Jan. 26, 2019 as “National School Choice Week” and congratulating charter school students, parents, teachers, and school leaders for their persistence, achievements, dedications, and contributions to education.
