WASHINGTON, D.C., Jan. 23 – Senate education committee Chairman Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) today released the following statement commemorating National School Choice Week of 2018:
“This is school choice week, and for me and others who favor school choice, that means giving low-income families more of the same choices of schools that wealthier families already have for their children. And there is good news in the new tax bill that the president just signed for families who want to exercise school choice because you can use the 529 savings accounts in the tax code—which previously you could only use to help pay for college—you can now use them to help pay for tuition at an accredited religious or private school. So I’m going to continue to work to give more American families broader choices of the best possible schools for their children.”
Alexander is a cosponsor of a resolution offered by Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) today designating the week of Jan. 21 through Jan. 27, 2018 as “National School Choice Week” and congratulating charter school students, parents, teachers, and school leaders for their persistence, achievements, dedications, and contributions to education.
