HELP Committee Votes to Advance EEOC, DOL, FMSHRC Nominees

HELP Committee votes on nominations of Karla Gilbride, Jessica Looman, and Moshe Marvit

(Washington, D.C.) – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), Chair of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP), led a mark-up to advance nominees to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), Department of Labor (DOL), and Federal Mine Safety and Health Review Commission (FMSHRC).

“Today, we voted on highly qualified nominees who are ready to hit the ground running to protect workers’ rights and build a better, fairer economy for everyone,” said Senator Murray. “I’ll be working hard to get their nominations across the finish line so they can get to work defending workers’ rights—because no one should ever be denied the wages they’ve earned, have to work in an unsafe workplace, or face discrimination or harassment on the job.”

The HELP Committee advanced the nomination of Karla Gilbride to be General Counsel of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission by a vote of 12-10. Senators Murray, Sanders, Casey, Baldwin, Murphy, Kaine, Hassan, Smith, Rosen, Luján, Hickenlooper, and Collins voted in favor of the nomination. Senators Burr, Paul, Cassidy, Murkowski, Braun, Marshall, Scott, Romney, Tuberville, and Moran voted against the nomination.

The HELP Committee advanced the nomination of Jessica Looman to be Administrator of the Wage and Hour Division at the Department of Labor by a vote of 13-9. Senators Murray, Sanders, Casey, Baldwin, Murphy, Kaine, Hassan, Smith, Rosen, Luján, Hickenlooper, Collins, and Murkowski voted in favor of the nomination. Senators Burr, Paul, Cassidy, Braun, Marshall, Scott, Romney, Tuberville, and Moran voted against the nomination.

The HELP Committee voted 11-11 on advancing the nomination of Moshe Marvit to be a Member of the Federal Mine Safety and Health Review Commission. Senators Murray, Sanders, Casey, Baldwin, Murphy, Kaine, Hassan, Smith, Rosen, Luján, and Hickenlooper voted in favor of the nomination. Senators Burr, Paul, Collins, Cassidy, Murkowski, Braun, Marshall, Scott, Romney, Tuberville, and Moran voted against the nomination. Because of the 11-11 vote, the Committee will transmit a notice of a tie vote to the Secretary of the Senate. The nomination will now await a motion to discharge the nomination in a vote by the full Senate.
