President Chooses to Politicize Education Instead of Working with Congress

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Mike Enzi (R-Wyo.), Ranking Member on the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee, said he was disappointed to see President Obama politicize America’s education policy instead of working with Congress, after it was announced that several states would receive waivers from the No Child Left Behind law.

“Our children’s education should not be a political poker chip.  But what the president has announced today are not waivers.  Much like the recent unconstitutional recess appointments, this is another end run around Congress’ constitutional role to legislate,” said Senator Enzi.  “This action clearly politicizes education policy, which historically has been a bipartisan issue.  It is time for the president to work with Congress on important issues like this, instead of acting unilaterally.”
