Murray: Birth Control Benefit Is “Fundamental” to Ensuring Affordable Health Care for All

Murray: “I am confident that ultimately, the Supreme Court will rule in favor of Congress’s intention to ensure women everywhere, no matter who they work for or where they live, have access to the critical reproductive services they need.”

(Washington, D.C.) – Today, Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), ranking member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee, issued the following statement in response to the Supreme Court's decision in Zubik v. Burwell:

“When Congress passed the Affordable Care Act, our goal was to expand access to affordable health care for all—and a fundamental part of that was making sure that in the 21st century, employers provide women and their families with access to birth control with no out-of-pocket costs. I am confident that ultimately, the Supreme Court will rule in favor of Congress’s intention to ensure women everywhere, no matter who they work for or where they live, have access to the critical reproductive services they need.

“Today’s ruling also underscores, again, the need for a full bench on the Supreme Court. It’s time for Republicans to drop the politics and dysfunction and give Justice Garland a hearing, fair consideration, and a vote.”
