Murray Statement on Obama Administration Proposals to Combat Opioid Abuse

(Washington, D.C.) – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), Ranking Member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee released the following statement on the President’s announcement of budget proposals to tackle prescription drug abuse and heroin use.

“For far too long, prescription drug abuse and heroin use has hurt communities, ruined lives, and torn families apart—and the problem is only getting worse. I’m pleased that the Administration has laid out budget proposals to help address this crisis, including helping states expand access to medication-assisted treatment and investing in health care providers who offer substance use disorder treatment in the communities where it is most needed. I’m looking forward to continued work with the HELP Committee, the Administration, and all of my colleagues on additional steps to put an end to this epidemic and protect families and communities from the pain and hardship it is causing.”
