WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA), ranking member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee, released a statement bringing attention to the over 300 substance-abuse prevention and treatment, mental health and other policy organizations that have called on the HELP Committee to take up and reauthorize the SUPPORT Act. This legislation funds important programs that bolster prevention, treatment, and recovery services for Americans with substance use disorders. The SUPPORT Act expired on September 30th.
“Thousands of Americans are dying each month from opioid and drug overdoses. The HELP committee needs to hold a markup to reauthorize the SUPPORT Act so we can evaluate, improve and fund these life-saving programs. Missing these deadlines puts vital resources in jeopardy,” said Dr. Cassidy. “I appreciate the support from the advocates expressing the urgency of this problem. Even if there are some differences in opinion on specific policies to include, we all agree the HELP Committee needs to get the SUPPORT Act reauthorization done.”
Since the beginning of the 118th Congress, Cassidy has stressed the importance of the Senate HELP Committee fulfilling its responsibility to take up and reauthorize expiring public health programs. Due to lack of action, Cassidy introduced legislation to reauthorize the SUPPORT Act in July.
