Ranking Member Cassidy on Democrat Show Vote

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA), ranking member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee, released a statement after his vote to oppose the Democrats’ so-called “Right to Contraception Act,” legislation that is so broad it promotes chemical abortion drugs and disregards the conscience rights of medical professionals to advance a political agenda.

“The Democrats are using their power to push an alarmist and false narrative that there is a problem accessing contraception,” said Dr. Cassidy. “There is no state or territory that bans access to birth control. Democrats know this, but misleading and scaring voters seems to be the only means they think they have to get voters to support them this election.”

“This is a political stunt designed to fearmonger and mislead the public in an attempt to sway voters in an election year. Republicans should not play along,” continued Dr. Cassidy

In addition to there being no state bans, multiple Supreme Court decisions have established clear protections for commonly used contraception like birth control pills.

Before the vote, Cassidy delivered a floor speech highlighting the serious issues with the Democrats’ legislation that promotes access to chemical abortion drugs and explicitly eliminates conscience protections for health care providers under the Religious Freedom Restoration Act.
